<address><addrLine>My dear comadre,</addrLine></address>

<salute>I hope this letter finds you well in the company of the kids, we are <app loc="1"><rdg>well</rdg></app> <app loc="2"><rdg>healthy</rdg></app>, thank God.</salute>
</opener>

<p>Comadre, I received your letter in which you tell send me the assessment document for 1939. Well, this is the one I wanted them to give me at the courthouse. I could not asses <app loc="1"><rdg>it</rdg></app> <app loc="2"><rdg>your property</rdg></app> because don Faustin went there before me. They were right when they told me that they couldn’t find you, because your document had been assessed already, that’s why they told me to go in March, because in March they are assessing again.</p>

<p>But I won’t go, comadre, because they <app loc="1"><rdg>embarrass</rdg></app> <app loc="2"><rdg>shame</rdg></app> me and ask
me which of us is in charge of that property. I’m sending you the two documents here. This tax from 1939 doesn’t have to be paid until December, remember. And write to don Faustin and tell him that if he did pay the taxes, that he send you the receipts, like I did.</p>

<p>I don’t think he did, because he is not sending you the receipts, only the assessment document.</p>

<p>Let’s see what he tells you, and you tell me in

<pb facs="shan_l.111.jpg"/>

your reply <app loc="1"><rdg>next letter</rdg></app></p>

<p>No, comadre, there are no adobe bricks on your lot, like you ask me.</p>

<p>I am happy that your brother is coming to see you. It’s possible that he won’t leave, that he will remain with you.</p>

<p>My impression from your letters is that you and the kids are <app loc="1"><rdg>very happy</rdg></app> <app loc="2"><rdg>very comfortable</rdg></app>. A ranch is a good place to live. These places <add resp="iv001">Albuquerque</add> are nothing more than expenses and there’s no way to <app loc="1" cert="high"><rdg>pick up</rdg></app> <app loc="1" cert="high"><rdg>save</rdg></app>money, you saw it when you lived here. We’ve had a lot of snow. It’s very cold here. We’ve never seen so much snow like now in the sierra can’t even bring firewood to sell.</p>

<p>Without further to add and expecting your response, your comadre who wishes you happiness, say hello to Santos and Jesus.</p>
